The Sonos Connect modified by Wyred 4 Sound replaces the stock Cirrus Logic DAC and associated high jitter clocks with a custom board that directly converts the I2S signal into an upsampled SPDIF output. This modification provides an ultra-clean, low jitter digital signal available through both coaxial and optical outputs. The SPDIF output sample rate can be factory configured to 44.1, 48, 88.2, or 96kHz, with 96kHz recommended for best sonic performance. The mod significantly reduces low-level digital noise and grunge, improving microdynamic detail, imaging, and bass control. It is designed to integrate the Sonos Connect into high-end audio systems via an external DAC, enhancing sound quality without altering the analog output stage. While it does not enable native high-resolution playback beyond 48kHz, the upsampling and reclocking greatly improve the perceived audio quality of streamed music. The modification voids the original Sonos warranty and costs approximately - plus shipping for upgrades to existing units. Wyred 4 Sound has modded around 1000 Sonos units since 2008, and the modded Connect is praised for making the Sonos sound more easeful, with better tone color saturation and microdynamics compared to stock units.
