About the Work of Art

The Basis Audio Work of Art is the company's statement reference turntable, conceived as a tribute to the science and art of vinyl reproduction and designed to represent the pinnacle of analog playback performance. It was formally introduced at the Winter CES in January 2004 and remains one of the most ambitious record players ever produced. The design follows Basis's systems-engineering approach, in which every subsystem is analyzed and optimized to reduce noise, resonance, and speed error. The Work of Art features a striking, sculptural architecture built from solid billet materials that are precision-machined rather than cast, with extensive hand finishing by skilled machinists to achieve extremely tight tolerances and mechanical stability. It is mounted on an integrated stand and employs a mass-spring-damper isolation system and a dedicated Resonance Annihilator structure to control and dissipate vibrational energy as heat. In typical reference configurations, the package includes Basis technologies such as the Super Platter, Synchro-Wave power supply, and a vacuum record hold-down system that clamps the LP to the platter and can effectively flatten warped records. With an appropriate Basis tonearm the system delivers exceptional dynamics, low-level detail, natural tonal balance, harmonic richness, and precise imaging, bringing vinyl playback closer to the character of analog master tapes. Production is extremely limited and each unit involves extensive custom machining and setup, combining advanced engineering with artisanal craftsmanship for state-of-the-art analog performance.
