About the 64 X
The Tandberg 64 X is a high-fidelity reel-to-reel tape recorder produced by Tandberg Radio in Oslo, Norway, from 1966 to 1968. It supports four-track stereo and monaural recording and playback with three selectable tape speeds: 7.5, 3.75, and 1.875 inches per second. The frequency response ranges from 30 Hz to 20 kHz at the highest speed, with channel separation better than 60 dB. The unit uses a synchronous motor and features four separate tape heads: erase, record, playback, and a unique cross field bias head that feeds a bias signal from behind the tape across to the opposite channel record head, reducing distortion during recording. The 64 X is a hybrid design incorporating 10 vacuum tubes, 8 transistors, and 2 selenium rectifiers. It has a wooden cabinet with silver and black finish and weighs approximately 30 lbs. Dimensions are about 16 x 12 x 6 inches (394 x 298.5 x 171.5 mm). The U.S. version operates on 115V 60 Hz AC with an interlock system for mains input.
