About the HP200
The Hovland HP-200 is a vacuum tube preamplifier designed for audiophiles seeking high detail and transparency in sound reproduction. It features a handmade, silver-contact, 31-step discrete-resistor volume control that is remote-controllable via a highly linear metal-film resistor attenuator circuit with rhodium-plated, hermetically sealed twin relays. Input selection and other functions are also controlled remotely through a relay process, with controls located near the rear-panel jacks to minimize signal path length. The HP-200 shares the same three-tube linestage and solid-state power supply as the HP-100 but offers improved detail and transparency. It includes an optional internal solid-state phono stage (P-200) compatible with cartridges outputting 3mV or less, with adjustable gain and impedance settings accessible by removing the side plate. The chassis measures approximately 18.25" x 4.88" x 15.52" (WxHxD) and weighs about 12.2 kg. The unit is known for its build quality, sonic performance, and remote functionality, making it a sophisticated choice for high-end audio systems.
