About the Purcell
The dCS Purcell is a consumer-oriented digital/digital converter and upsampler based on the professional dCS 972, using the same DSP engine and code to increase sample rate and word length from PCM sources such as CD (16-bit/44.1kHz) up to 24-bit at 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz, or DSD. It employs powerful digital interpolation filters to produce very low distortion outputs and can also perform downsampling (e.g., 96kHz to 48kHz or 44.1kHz; 48kHz to 44.1kHz) for making compatible copies to lower-rate devices. Inputs include two IEEE1394 (I/O) ports for DSD, plus one each AES/EBU XLR, S/PDIF RCA, S/PDIF BNC, Toslink, optional ST optical, and word clock in/out; outputs are via dual AES/EBU XLR, RCA, and BNC, supporting single-wire operation at 32-96kHz and dual AES at 88.2-192kHz, with DSD at 2.822MS/s over IEEE1394 when used with a 44.1kHz word clock. Typical use is in pairing with dCS DACs such as the Delius or Elgar family over dual AES or IEEE1394 to access the highest sample rates or DSD. Originally introduced around 2000 as the world's first dedicated 24/192 upsampler, the Purcell is no longer in production.
