About the 001

The Burmester 001 is a premium CD player that also functions as a fully featured preamplifier for digital-only systems. It uses a proprietary DSP algorithm to upsample all digital inputs, including its belt-driven CD transport, to 24-bit/96kHz before D/A conversion via four matched DAC chips in a balanced configuration. The transport is built in-house with a Philips laser head and features a superprecision ball bearing on a sapphire surface, a specially frozen and cut belt for stability, and is mounted on a massive aluminum slab suspended by elastomer mounts to minimize vibration. The analog output stage employs Burmester's X-amp topology, fully balanced, DC-coupled, and pure class-A, capable of driving any amplifier directly. The 001 offers variable or fixed analog output levels, selectable via a startup button sequence, and volume control is electronic in the analog domain with 60 discrete steps. It provides both single-ended and balanced analog outputs, multiple digital inputs (2 S/PDIF RCA, 1 AES/EBU XLR, 1 optical TosLink), and digital outputs (S/PDIF and optical). Two analog filter modes are available: Soft for a spatial and warm sound, and Linear for optimal linear phase and frequency response with spatial warmth.
