About the Centaur Minor
Released between 1991 and 1994, the Apogee Centaur Minor was the smallest and most affordable model in Apogee's Centaur series of hybrid ribbon speakers. It features a 26" (6-element) etched aluminum/Kapton ribbon tweeter, the same used in the later Apogee Stage model, paired with a 6.5" dynamic cone woofer mounted in a long rectangular enclosure positioned to allow the dipole ribbon tweeter to fire into free air. The woofer is placed at the mid-point height of the ribbon tweeter for time alignment. The speaker stands 100 cm tall, 35 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, with a weight of 24 kg each. It has a frequency response from 40 Hz (-3 dB) to 20 kHz, an electronic crossover frequency at 800 Hz, and an impedance nominally 6 ohms (minimum 4 ohms). It is recommended to be driven by amplifiers of 50 W into 8 ohms or 100 W into 4 ohms. The maximum sound level is 107 dB at 4 meters with a 50 W amplifier. The cabinet finish is silver grey. A reflex port modification was later added to improve bass extension, though the original sealed design offers tight and articulate bass. The Centaur Minor is praised for its airy, dynamic sound and is suitable for high-end sources and audiophile listening environments. It is no longer manufactured but remains a sought-after vintage speaker.
