About the Centaur Major
The Apogee Centaur Major was produced between 1991 and 1994 as the largest model in Apogee's Centaur hybrid speaker range. It combines a 10" dynamic cone woofer housed in a large enclosure with a 40" aluminium/Kapton ribbon tweeter arranged as a dipole. The speaker measures 163 cm in height, 46 cm in width, and 30 cm in depth, with the woofer enclosure approximately 107 cm high and 28 cm wide and deep. It has an impedance ranging from 3.5 to 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 83 dB measured at 3 meters. The frequency response extends from 30 Hz (-3 dB) up to 20 kHz, with an electronic crossover frequency at 450 Hz. The speaker can handle maximum sound levels up to 110 dB and is recommended to be driven by a high-quality, high-current amplifier with power ratings of 100 W into 8 ohms or 200 W into 4 ohms. The Centaur Major weighs about 200 lbs per pair and was available in finishes including silver grey, rosewood, walnut, blonde oak, and mahogany. Due to its size and design, it requires significant room space and careful amplifier matching. Restoration and maintenance can be costly and specialized due to the unique ribbon tweeter design and woofer enclosure.
