The A.R Sugden Connoisseur BD1 is a vintage, high-quality turntable designed and manufactured by A.R Sugden & Co. Ltd in Yorkshire. It features a 2-speed belt-drive system operating at 33.33 and 45 rpm, driven by a synchronous constant speed motor with very low hum, making it suitable for sensitive cartridges. The turntable platter is a 10 1/4 inch lathe-turned aluminium casting with a phosphor bronze bearing and a hard steel thrust ball to minimize friction and wear. The drive uses a precision ground rubber belt that virtually eliminates vibration and transmission noise. The BD1 is designed for solid mounting on its own board and has a slimline construction requiring only 2 inches of space below the mounting platform. It was sold in kit form and is known for its simplicity, reliability, and performance exceeding broadcast specifications for hum, rumble, wow, and flutter. The unit is no longer manufactured but remains a respected classic among audiophiles.
