About the Opal
The Wyetech Labs Opal is a premium tube preamplifier designed with precision quality parts and hand-crafted fixed terminal circuit boards for superior sonic performance and durability. It uses four 6SN7WGTA NOS dual triode tubes and one 6X5 NOS dual diode tube, all military specification. The circuit is based on a grounded grid configuration isolated by cathode follower stages, providing a non-inverting absolute phase and extremely wide bandwidth. The Opal features a 24-position stepped volume control, variable master gain controls for left and right channels, and multiple inputs and outputs including four line level inputs, one tape input, two preamp outputs, one tape output, and one line level output. It delivers a rated output of 3.5 V RMS with a maximum of 20 V RMS and an output impedance of 425 ohms. The frequency response is exceptionally flat from 20 Hz to 100 kHz, extending up to 750 kHz with minimal roll-off. The unit includes an automatic power sequence with muting to protect speakers during startup. The preamplifier weighs 38.5 lbs with an external power supply weighing 18 lbs. Dimensions are 19" W x 14 3/8" D x 5 1/4" H for the preamp and 9" W x 12" D x 3 1/2" H for the power supply. It requires 50 watts of power and supports switch-selectable 115/230 V operation. The Opal is highly regarded for its transparency, organic sound, and wide dynamic range, making it a top-tier choice for audiophiles seeking a natural and detailed listening experience.
