About the 618B
The Western Electric 618B is a highly regarded vintage step-up transformer designed primarily for moving coil (MC) cartridges. It features pure, precisely hand-wound copper coils and a transformation ratio of approximately 1:20. Its frequency response ranges from about 4 Hz to 16 kHz at -3dB, delivering a warm and smooth sound signature that is highly prized by audiophiles, especially in vintage audio setups such as those involving EMT turntables and Neumann cartridges. The 618B is known for its natural, detailed, and forgiving sound, often described as enveloping the listener in music. Due to its rarity and vintage status, original units command very high prices, Modern clones and recreations exist, using similar winding techniques and materials to replicate the original's sonic characteristics. The transformer is housed in a shielded body to reduce interference and is considered one of the finest SUTs ever made, with a cult following among audiophiles and collectors.
