About the 860
The Wadia 860 is a integrated CD player and digital preamplifier that combines a refined chassis design with advanced digital audio technologies. It features multiple digital inputs including glass fiber optic (ST), S/PDIF (BNC), plastic fiber (Toslink), and AES/EBU (XLR). The unit outputs an attenuated analog signal directly to an amplifier, allowing it to function without a separate preamplifier. It uses a digital volume control system called DigiMaster, which applies dithering to maintain audio quality during digital attenuation. The 860 outputs a 21-bit digital word and is upgradable to 24-bit 96 kHz input/output capability. The design philosophy emphasizes minimal circuitry in the signal path to preserve the resolution and emotional impact of traditional 16-bit CDs and other digital sources. The player is remote-controlled and features a two-part display showing CD transport status and preamp functions. It is designed to be left powered on without harm, with motors and laser circuitry turning off when not playing. Dimensions are approximately 17" wide by 7" high by 16" deep, and it weighs about 48 lbs (22 kg).
