About the 5A Carbon
The Vandersteen 5A Carbon is a full-range floorstanding loudspeaker with a powered bass system, derived from the classic Model 5/5A and positioned as the ultra-competitive little brother to the flagship Model Seven. It uses a carbon-dome tweeter and a carbon-fiber/balsa-core midrange driver descended from Vandersteen's patented Perfect-Piston technology developed for the Model Seven, incorporating more than a decade of driver R&D. The design is a time- and phase-accurate, first-order multiway system with built-in powered sub-bass, using an internal high-current amplifier (around 400W) to drive its active bass section for deep, low-distortion response into the low 20Hz range and easier amplifier loading in the mids and highs. As with other Vandersteen references, it employs minimum-baffle, non-resonant cabinetry and carefully time-aligned driver geometry to preserve coherence, imaging, and natural musicality. Sensitivity is about 87dB with a nominal impedance around 6–8 ohms, and recommended external amplification is typically in the 40–300W range, making the speaker relatively easy to drive for its class thanks to the powered bass section. Known for its transparency, wide soundstage, and fatigue-free presentation, the 5A Carbon has been discontinued and was effectively superseded by models such as the Kento Carbon.
