About the FVP-5
The Vacuum State FVP-5 (also known as FVP5A) is a sophisticated single-ended tube preamplifier designed by Allen Wright of Vacuum State Electronics. It features a hybrid FET/valve two-stage moving coil/moving magnet phonostage with passive RIAA equalization, and a full-valve cascoded line amplifier stage. The power supply is robust, employing a custom SuperReg shunt regulator based on an AD797 opamp, providing about 120 dB of power interference rejection. The preamp uses 12 pieces of 6922 tubes, with only three tube stages total, and is designed for low noise and high gain. The FVP-5 is It is highly regarded for its speed, neutrality, dynamic range, and detailed soundstage, with a design philosophy emphasizing no negative feedback, hand wiring, and high-quality components such as Audyn KP-SN foil-and-polypropylene capacitors. The unit is housed in a large custom-built chassis that supports various circuit boards and modules. The FVP-5 has evolved over two decades and is considered a reference-level preamplifier in the audiophile community.
