About the TD160 Super
The Thorens TD-160 Super is a premium belt-drive turntable manufactured by Thorens, targeted at the audiophile market. It features a floating suspension system with a specially damped chassis and a thicker bearing for improved stability and resonance absorption. The turntable uses a 16-pole two-phase synchronous motor with a slip clutch for instantaneous start and offers two speeds: 33⅓ and 45 rpm, mechanically selected. The base is larger and heavier than previous models, with a resonance-absorbing mat and friction lid hinge. It weighs approximately 11 kg and measures 445 mm × 360 mm × 170 mm (height with cover closed). The platter is a massive, dynamically balanced zinc alloy design that contributes to flywheel smoothing and reduced vibration. The motor speed is directly related to mains frequency, ensuring stable speed without aging effects. The TD-160 Super does not come with a tonearm, allowing users to fit their choice, often paired with the Thorens TP-16 tonearm or SME arms. It is highly sought after in the vintage and used markets due to its build quality and sound performance.
