About the TD147
The Thorens TD-147 is a high-quality, 2-speed belt-driven turntable featuring a suspended chassis design and an auto-stop mechanism. It was manufactured from 1982 to 1985, including a special 1983 Jubilee edition celebrating Thorens' 100th anniversary. The turntable uses a low voltage 16-pole synchronous motor with slip clutch for instantaneous start and speed control synchronized by mains frequency. It supports 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds, mechanically switchable. The platter is a 3.2 kg, 300 mm zinc alloy, dynamically balanced for low wow and flutter (0.04%) and low rumble (-72 dB). The tonearm is the Thorens ISOTRACK TP16 MkIII with an effective length of 232 mm, effective mass of 7.5 g, overhang of 16.4 mm, and offset angle of 23 degrees, designed for low resonance and clean, uncolored sound. The turntable weighs approximately 11 kg and measures about 440 x 350 x 170 mm. It is highly regarded for its calmness, drive, dynamics, and bass power, making it a classic audiophile choice. The Jubilee edition is particularly collectible and features a gold finish and the TP-16 MKIII tonearm. Restored versions often include walnut veneer cabinetry, improved suspension, and upgraded power supplies and cables for enhanced performance.
