The Thorens TD 124 MK II is a classic, precision-engineered turntable from Switzerland, manufactured between 1966 and 1968. It combines a belt and idler wheel drive system powered by a 4-pole AC reluctance motor, offering speeds of 16⅔, 33⅓, 45, and 78 RPM with pitch control of ±3%. The turntable features a heavy cast iron or zinc alloy platter (300 mm diameter, 3.6 to 4.5 kg) topped with an aluminum sub-platter and mat. It is designed for manual operation and is renowned for its durability, low wow and flutter, and excellent isolation of motor vibrations, making it suitable for both monophonic and stereophonic sound reproduction. The TD 124 MK II was originally sold with tonearms such as the Thorens TP-14, SME 3012, or Ortofon S15T, and is highly regarded for its Swiss craftsmanship and studio-quality performance exceeding NAB standards. It weighs approximately 10 to 15 kg depending on configuration and comes in a walnut finish. The turntable has RCA outputs and is compatible with various tonearms and cartridges, often customized by owners for optimal performance.
