The Thiel SmartSub SS1 is the entry-level model in Thiel's SmartSub line of subwoofers, designed to deliver exceptionally deep, uniform, and dynamic bass with very low distortion. It features a single 10" high-excursion aluminum driver with a short-coil, long-gap motor system, powered by a 500 watt linear Class AB amplifier with a tracking switching power supply. The subwoofer is housed in a compact cabinet measuring 20" H x 11" W x 15.5" D and weighs 55 pounds. It produces up to 99 dB output at 20 Hz and up to 106 dB at 30 Hz, providing clean and taut low-frequency performance that integrates seamlessly with Thiel main speakers. The SS1 does not include a built-in crossover; instead, it is designed to be used with Thiel's passive crossovers or the active S1 Integrator crossover for optimal system integration. Controls on the back panel allow adjustment for room placement without complicated measurements. The subwoofer's design emphasizes subtlety and tonal accuracy over brute force, making it suitable for both music and home theater applications. It was highly praised for its ease of setup, sonic integration, and ability to enhance bass depth and quality without calling attention to itself.
