About the SCS 1400

The Thiel SCS 1400 speaker is a two-way, floor-standing loudspeaker that employs a coaxial driver design, placing a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter in the throat of a 6.5-inch aluminum midrange/woofer cone. This design aims to achieve phase coherence and time alignment, resulting in accurate phase, time, and amplitude response. The midrange/woofer cone is reinforced with polystyrene backing to reduce resonances, and the driver motor system uses a short-coil/long-gap design with dual magnets to maintain constant inductance even at high excursions. The speaker features two front-firing ports loaded with removable foam plugs to adjust damping and bass response. The cabinet is dense, well-damped, and finished with rich veneer on all six sides. The SCS 1400 has a frequency response roughly from 48 Hz to 20 kHz ±2 dB, a sensitivity of about 87 dB at 2.8 V/1m, and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. It requires a minimum amplifier power of around 30 watts per channel. The speaker weighs approximately 31 pounds and is praised for its superb cabinet design, overall pleasing sound, and the ability to maintain soundstage and imaging with excellent transient response. The design minimizes high-frequency lobing and crossover region power response anomalies common in other speakers. The speaker is recommended to be used with the foam plugs in the ports for optimal bass control and clarity.
