About the Miles

The Theta Miles is a high-end single-box CD player first released in June 1997 as Theta Digital's first Compact Disc player. It is based on the ultra-stable Pearl transport and includes both a built-in DAC and digital outputs so it can also function as a transport with external DACs. The Miles features an inverted platter disc mechanism, where the CD is placed label-side down into a heavy metal platter to provide a very stable platform for the laser and reduce vibration. Internally it uses multiple, separately regulated power supplies (no fewer than four) to improve isolation between circuits and lower noise. The player incorporates analog-domain variable output level control, allowing direct connection to a power amplifier and system volume adjustment via the remote in roughly 25 steps over about a 75 dB range. Its analog output stage is derived from the controller circuitry used in the original Theta Casablanca processor, contributing to the Miles' reputation for detailed sound, deep and controlled bass, and strong stereo imaging. Widely regarded as a solidly built, late-1990s audiophile component, the Miles is considered durable and remains valued on the used market as both a CD player and transport.
