About the Data Universal II
The Theta Digital Data Universal II is a large, solidly built universal disc transport designed to play multiple optical disc formats including CDs and videodiscs (Laserdiscs). It features a 12-inch drawer that accommodates 12" and 8" videodiscs as well as CDs. The unit is known for its heavy, battleship-like construction and over-engineered design, originally based on the Philips CDV-400 combination player. The Data Universal II outputs digital audio via S/PDIF coaxial RCA and requires an external DAC for digital audio playback from CDs. It also provides analog audio outputs for videodisc analog tracks and multiple video outputs including RF, composite video, and S-Video. The transport is noted for its slow loading and track access times, reflecting its videodisc heritage. It includes a remote control with extensive functions, although the complexity can be challenging. The unit is highly regarded for its excellent soundstage, spatial depth, and bass performance, making it a prized component in audiophile systems. The Data Universal II is no longer in production but remains sought after in the used market for its unique combination of video and audio transport capabilities.
