The Teac 25-2 is a 2-track, 1/4 inch reel-to-reel tape recorder introduced in the mid-1970s, designed for studio and broadcast use. It features a 2-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural system with 4 heads (1/2 track playback, 1/4 track playback, erase, and record heads) and a separate transport and amplifier for portability. The machine supports tape speeds of 7.5 and 15 inches per second and can handle reels up to 10.5 inches in diameter. It includes a DC servo capstan motor and two induction reel motors, with wow and flutter rated at 0.04% at 15 ips. The frequency response ranges from 25 Hz to 30 kHz at 15 ips, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB (with optional DBX noise reduction) and total harmonic distortion of 0.4%. Inputs include line (100 mV) and microphone (0.25 mV), with outputs via XLR and RCA connectors. The unit weighs 27 kg and measures 414 x 400 x 220 mm. It is highly regarded for its engineering quality, component selection, and sound performance, often considered one of the best Teac machines ever made. The 25-2 also features four optional DBX noise reduction plugin boards for improved signal-to-noise ratio and sound quality.
