About the 44
The Tascam 44 is a studio-grade 4-track, 4-channel tape machine using 1/4-inch tape on 26.5 cm reels. It operates at two speeds: 19 cm/s and 38 cm/s (7½ and 15 ips), providing flat frequency response up to 22 kHz at 15 ips and a signal-to-noise ratio of 64 dB (A-weighted). It features a servo-driven direct drive capstan motor with a non-magnetic ceramic pinch roller bearing system to eliminate tape dropout issues and ensure smooth, consistent playback with real-time sync playback equal to repro response. The unit includes balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs, with +4 dBm nominal level on XLRs offering 24 dB of headroom, and RCA inputs at -10 dBV. It has a robust power supply design with separate outputs for motors and audio stages to prevent heat build-up and ensure long-term reliability. The internal electronics are mounted on rugged glass-epoxy circuit cards for serviceability and performance, with accessible calibration trimmers for EQ, bias, and levels. The Tascam 44 supports full plug-in compatibility with SMPTE controllers and synchronizers via an accessory port, requiring no additional add-ons for sync capability. It is known for its precision transport, durable build, advanced servo logic, and low crosstalk circuit design, making it a preferred choice for mastering engineers, video post-production, and audio professionals needing dependable multitrack performance.
