About the Matrix
The Synthesis Art In Music Matrix DAC is an Italian-made digital-to-analog converter that uses two Wolfson WM8740 DAC chips, one for each channel, allowing for potential balanced operation though it is currently single-ended with RCA outputs. It supports 24-bit/192kHz upsampling and includes four S/PDIF inputs (optical and electrical) plus a USB B input for PC sources. The unit is noted for its high-quality casework and socketry, with a large, clear display. Sonically, it is praised for its enchanting sound, especially with voices, delivering superb timbre, good imaging, and timing without the vagueness or overblown qualities sometimes associated with valve DACs. It transforms the sound of mid-priced CD players, making them sound more refined and musical. However, some users have reported issues with USB connectivity on certain laptops and a slight inaccuracy in displayed sample rates. The DAC runs hot and has a standby button that fully powers it off. Overall, it is a refined and charming DAC that brings singers vividly into the listening space.
