About the PhD
The Sutherland PhD phono preamplifier is a dual-mono design powered by 16 alkaline D-cell batteries, providing over 800 hours of listening time with negligible power consumption and heat generation. It eliminates AC power line noise by completely isolating from the AC power line, relying solely on battery power. The unit features a unique plug-in configuration system with two square circuit boards per channel—one for cartridge loading and one for gain selection—allowing precise, high-quality connections with minimal signal path length. Gain settings range from 40 dB to 60 dB, and loading options include 100 ohms, 200 ohms, 1k ohms, and 47k ohms, accommodating both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. The chassis is constructed from 12-gauge steel for rigidity and magnetic shielding, with gold-plated circuit boards and a dual-mono layout to ensure balanced channel performance. The PhD automatically powers on when a signal is detected and includes LED indicators for power management status. It is highly regarded for its extremely low residual noise floor, dynamic and detailed sound, and minimal coloration, though some users note a slight compression of dynamics and a somewhat thin presentation compared to the very best stages. Dimensions are approximately 17" wide x 4" high x 14" deep, and it weighs about 38 lbs. The PhD is no longer in production but remains a sought-after classic in audiophile circles.
