About the DMC-10 Alpha
The Spectral DMC-10 Alpha is a classic all-analog preamplifier designed and handcrafted by Spectral Sound Associates in the USA. It features a Universal Phono Module with phono inputs equalized for constant velocity transducers, suitable for moving magnet, moving iron, and medium to high output moving coil cartridges. The preamp uses power MOSFETs, which provide a sound quality closer to pentode vacuum tubes by avoiding harsh distortions common in other solid-state devices. The Alpha version originally used Plessey white box polypropylene coupling capacitors at the phono stage and preamp outputs, which some users upgrade to higher quality WIMA polypro film caps. The power supply design includes a remote AC transformer chassis and DC rectifiers/filter capacitors in the preamp chassis, a design that has been noted as a compromise due to AC noise introduction. The DMC-10 Alpha is praised for its clean, uncolored sound with no harshness or grain, making it a favorite among analog enthusiasts. It has simple operation with critical adjustments like input volume and balance, and cartridge loading is selectable via internal switches for flexibility. The unit is known for its durability and can be serviced and upgraded for improved performance.
