The Sony PS-X75 is a high-end, fully automatic 2-speed (33 1/3 and 45 rpm) direct drive turntable produced between 1979 and 1982. It features Sony's unique Biotracer tonearm, which electronically controls tracking force and anti-skating using built-in sensors that monitor horizontal and vertical tonearm movement to suppress low-frequency resonance and maximize signal-to-noise ratio. The tonearm's stylus force is adjustable via a front panel knob even during playback, with automatic anti-skating applied accordingly. Record size detection is done by a photo sensor system that prevents tonearm descent if no record is present. An optical sensor detects lead-in and return points, guiding the tonearm precisely with a linear motor. Speed stability is maintained by a crystal oscillator and magnetic pick-up head monitoring a magnetic coating on the platter edge, ensuring accurate and drift-free rotation. The turntable also includes an electronic brake for smooth stopping. The chassis is made of low-resonance composite materials, and the platter is a 32cm die-cast aluminum alloy. The unit weighs approximately 13 kg and measures 480 x 165 x 420 mm. It was originally priced around 2,000 DM and is regarded as a pinnacle of Sony's turntable design with a distinctive black-rosewood finish. The PS-X75 is praised for its smooth operation, precise automatic functions, and ability to accommodate a wide range of cartridges due to the Biotracer arm design.
