About the Type J II
The Snell Type J II speakers continue Peter Snell's tradition of high-quality, uncolored sound with a simple 2-way crossover and a moderately sized bookshelf enclosure. The cabinet is veneered in genuine oak or walnut and measures 23 inches high, 13 inches wide, and 10 inches deep, weighing 38 pounds. It features an 8-inch long-throw woofer with a polymer-treated cone and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter crossed over at 2300 Hz. The enclosure is ported through a 1.5-inch opening aligned vertically with the drivers, enhancing bass extension without adding port noise. The crossover network is hand-matched to ensure optimal driver performance. The system has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a sensitivity of about 90-92 dB at 1 meter with 2.8 volts input, suitable for amplifiers from 15 to 150 watts. These speakers are highly regarded for their full-range, powerful soundstage and imaging, making them a classic choice for audiophiles. Many original units have been refurbished with new crossover capacitors, tweeter diaphragms, ferrofluid, and woofer foam to extend their lifespan.
