The SME Series IV tonearm is a precision gimbal-bearing pick-up arm featuring a unique one-piece pressure die-cast magnesium arm tube with an internally constrained layer to damp residual vibrations and render the arm acoustically inert. It uses high-precision ballrace bearings in a stereo gimbal arrangement for low friction and accurate tracking, derived from the technology of the flagship Series V. The arm provides sliding-base overhang adjustment and allows for setting vertical tracking angle (VTA) and tracking force over a 0-3 g range, accommodating a wide variety of cartridges in the 5-16 g range. Internal wiring is high-quality copper Litz (rather than the silver wiring of the Series V), chosen for low resistance and good signal integrity. Designed as a slightly simplified and more affordable derivative of the Series V, the Series IV is widely regarded for its neutrality, clarity, and excellent imaging, making it a popular choice for high-end turntables.
