The Modi 5 is Schiit Audio's most affordable standalone DAC, delivering high-performance digital-to-analog conversion at an entry-level price point. It incorporates Schiit's proprietary Mesh digital filter—a closed-form filter previously reserved for much more expensive models—which is optimized in both time and frequency domains to provide sound quality comparable to Schiit's flagship DACs. The Mesh filter works by combining Schiit's unique digital filtering algorithm with a 32-bit Microchip processor and a standard ESS delta-sigma modulator. The Modi 5 features Unison 384, Schiit's proprietary USB input implementation, and Linear Override, a unique power supply topology that allows flexible operation: it can run directly from USB power for a clean, simple desktop setup, or accept an external AC wall-wart to switch to a higher-voltage linear-regulated supply for increased output levels and headroom. The unit is compact and desk-friendly, designed and manufactured in the USA with SMD assembly at Schiit's facility in Corpus Christi, Texas, and metal enclosures made in California.
