About the Mark 1B
The SAE Mark 1B is a stereo preamplifier and equalizer produced between 1973 and 1977. It features a brushed stainless steel front panel with machined oversized knobs and a distinctive 7-band graphic equalizer covering frequencies from 40 Hz to 15 kHz. The unit offers dual phono inputs, dual auxiliary inputs, tuner input, dual tape ins/outs with tape copy selector, and front panel tape TRS jacks. It includes a stereo/mono mode switch, a 23-step resistor-array volume control with +/- 24dB gain, and two headphone outputs with a headphone mode switch. The rear panel provides eight accessory outlets (six switched, two unswitched), speaker outputs via banana/binding posts, a proprietary power amp input, and RCA inputs/outputs for each component. The preamplifier is known for its robust build, extensive control options, and vintage audiophile sound character. It weighs approximately 9.1 kg and measures 432 x 146 x 267 mm. The Mark 1B is highly regarded for its low distortion (0.02% THD), wide frequency response (10 Hz to 20 kHz), and signal-to-noise ratio of 80 dB (MM) and 100 dB (line).
