About the Precedent 646C
The REL Precedent 646C is a frequency modulation receiver designed and manufactured by Radio Engineering Laboratories Inc. in the early 1950s. It features fifteen vacuum tubes and ten germanium diodes, operating in the 88-108 MHz FM band. The tuner is monaural with hi/lo and 600Ω RCA audio outputs, consuming about 85 watts of power. It uses a fully permeability-tuned local oscillator coil with no tuning capacitor, eliminating the need for AFC. The front end employs a cascode design with multiple IF transformers and limiter tubes similar to those in the Marantz 10B, which the Precedent inspired. The chassis has a monocoque construction with a distinctive gold Plexiglass illuminated front panel and a bead chain drive for tuning. Modifications by experienced technicians can improve its output stage and signal buffering beyond original specifications. It is considered one of the first high-end FM tuners for the post-war FM band and is highly regarded for its sound quality and engineering excellence. The unit is collectible and commands prices around in excellent condition, with some variation depending on condition and modifications.
