The Rega Planar 5 turntable is built around a low-mass 'skeleton' plinth CNC-machined from a fibrous wood composite, sandwiched between satin-black phenolic sheets for rigidity and vibration control. It features a three-point stainless-steel mount tonearm derived from the RB1000 arm, ensuring a tight connection to the plinth. The platter is 11.6 inches in diameter, made of glass, and driven by a 24V, 50Hz AC synchronous motor with a machined alloy pulley allowing speed changes between 33rpm and 45rpm via belt repositioning. The motor is rigidly fastened to the plinth to reduce vibration. The bearing assembly includes a threaded brass bearing well with a steel ball bearing and a 0.3-inch steel axle pressed into a molded hub, a design lineage shared with earlier Planar models. The turntable includes a simple, hinged dustcover supported by an aluminum frame surround. Rubber feet with different isolation frequencies depending on mass concentration provide further vibration control.
