The Quad S-1 bookshelf speakers are part of Quad's S Series, designed to achieve 'The Closest Approach To The Original Sound'. They combine a bespoke 12 x 45 mm true ribbon tweeter with a 4-inch (100mm) woven Kevlar cone bass/midrange driver in a vented bass-reflex enclosure with rear-firing port. The ribbon tweeter provides smooth, extended high frequencies with controlled directivity, excellent transient response, and detail beyond human hearing limits. The cabinet uses sandwich construction of MDF and high-density particleboard to minimize resonance. Available in finishes like black wood veneer, piano black, white, or sapele mahogany. They offer bi-wire/bi-amp capability via dual binding posts and removable magnetic grilles. Reviews praise their detailed, precise sound with excellent treble and midrange integration, rhythmic precision, and wide soundstage, though bass is not the most authoritative due to size. Sensitivity is relatively low at 84dB, recommending capable amplifiers.
