About the 440
The Proton 440 is an AM/FM stereo tuner originally released in the mid-1980s, It features a mono/stereo tuner design with digital tuning scale and supports FM and MW bands. The tuner is noted for its excellent sensitivity (1.8uV for FM, 25uV for MW), high signal-to-noise ratio (74dB FM, 43dB MW), low distortion (0.2% FM, 0.5% MW), and 35dB selectivity on MW. It incorporates Schotz noise reduction circuitry for FM, which contributes to its quiet and clear sound. The tuner weighs approximately 15 lbs and has dimensions of 16 x 3 x 10 inches. It was manufactured by Proton A/S, a Norwegian company, and made in Taiwan in 1986. The Proton 440 is praised for its deep bass and clean sound, although it has relatively wide filters affecting selectivity. It is considered a good tuner for DXing with some filter modifications. The unit is no longer manufactured and is commonly found used in the -60 price range on resale markets.
