About the TVC
The Promitheus Audio TVC is a passive preamplifier that uses transformer volume control technology to attenuate audio signals. Unlike conventional volume controls that dissipate excess energy, the TVC converts voltage drops into increased current, resulting in improved sound quality especially at lower listening levels. It features 24 volume steps with 2dB increments, allowing fine tuning to the listener's preferred volume. The unit is designed to handle input voltages up to 20Vrms to accommodate musical transients without limiting dynamics or bass response. The TVC includes multiple inputs and outputs (4 RCA inputs and 2 RCA outputs for single-ended versions, with balanced versions offering XLR inputs and outputs), and is constructed with high-quality materials such as 7N OCC copper internal wiring, pure solid 4N German silver wiring for transformers, and a chassis reinforced with stainless steel plates for rigidity and vibration damping. The case sides and knobs are made from Nyatuh wood, with stainless steel top and bottom plates. The transformer design uses nickel-pulse cores with tight laminations for optimal performance. Sonically, the TVC is praised for adding body and dynamic punch to midrange and midbass frequencies, providing a tube-like warmth while maintaining transparency and quietness without hiss. It is noted for a slight truncation of the deepest bass but overall enhances image density and presence. The unit weighs approximately 12 pounds and is compact in size. It is a highly regarded affordable audiophile preamplifier with a reputation for excellent sound quality and build.
