About the SB301
The Plinius SB-301 is a stereo power amplifier designed and manufactured by Plinius Audio Ltd in New Zealand. It delivers 310 watts continuous power per channel into 8 ohms with both channels driven, covering a frequency response from 20Hz to 20kHz ±0.2dB and extending to -3dB at 70kHz. It features very low distortion, typically less than 0.05% THD at rated power, and a high signal-to-noise ratio of 100dB A-weighted. The amplifier uses a high-bias Class AB design with a robust power supply including twin toroidal transformers and large filter capacitors, ensuring excellent current delivery and dynamic capability. It has a gain of 32dB on RCA inputs and 38dB on balanced inputs, with an input impedance of 47,000 ohms. The SB-301 is built with a massive aluminum chassis and large heatsinks, weighing 38 kg, and measures 500mm wide, 220mm high, and 455mm deep. It includes features such as error detection, fuse protection, and a remote trigger for standby mode. The amplifier is praised for its ability to drive demanding loudspeakers with finesse, transparency, and dynamic control, making it suitable for high-end music and theater applications. It is no longer a current production model but remains highly regarded in audiophile circles for its sound quality and build robustness.
