The Playback Designs Dream Player MPS-8 is a reference-class, integrated SACD/CD player and discrete-DAC music playback system. It combines Playback Designs’ dedicated SACD/CD transport, a fully differential discrete DAC, separate high-end differential analog stages for each channel, and a digitally controlled analog volume stage that permits direct connection to a power amplifier. It can also operate as an external DAC through USB, AES/EBU, S/PDIF coaxial, TosLink, and proprietary optical PLINK connections. The Stream-X network-streaming module was offered as an optional installation; later dealer documentation also refers to a Stream-X2 option. The platform is user-updatable and supports computer recording software. Playback Designs specifies a single master-clock architecture for the unit’s control, signal-processing, digital-input, and display circuitry.
