The Pioneer CT-959 is a 3-head, single compact cassette deck designed for high fidelity audio playback and recording. Manufactured in Japan between 1990 and 1991, it features a 4-track, 2-channel stereo system with a tape speed of 4.75 cm/s. The deck supports tape types including Metal, Chrome, and Normal, and incorporates Dolby B and C noise reduction along with HX-Pro headroom extension for improved sound quality. It has a frequency response of 15 Hz to 22 kHz (metal tape), a signal-to-noise ratio of 79 dB (Dolby C), and wow and flutter of 0.022%. The deck uses a Reference Master Mechanism with three motors (reel, capstan, assist) and three audio heads (combination record/playback and erase). It includes features such as a vibration damping cassette stabilizer, a copper-shielded power transformer, and a line straight switch to bypass balance control for minimal distortion during recording. The CT-959 does not have auto-reverse but offers title search and CD synchro recording. It weighs 8.4 kg and measures 420 x 134.5 x 370 mm. The deck is noted for its transparent sound, precise micro details, and strong bass performance, making it a high-class contender among cassette decks of its era. It is no longer manufactured and is considered a rare and collectible unit today.
