About the Eagle

The Phoenix Engineering Eagle is a two-piece Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) PSU designed for synchronous turntable motors up to 25 watts. It features a smaller controller housing the frequency generator, user interface, and logic circuits, and a larger remote amplifier that boosts the signal to 115VAC or 230VAC output. The Eagle uses a 28-bit DDS function generator controlled by an Atmel AT89C52 microprocessor with an 8.388608MHz crystal oscillator for highly stable frequency generation. It offers precise speed control with ±1.0 RPM adjustment in 0.1 RPM steps (normal mode) and 0.01 RPM steps in calibration mode, supporting 33.3, 45, and optionally 78 RPM speeds. The unit includes soft start to prevent belt burnout and automatic voltage reduction once the platter reaches speed. The two-piece design allows the amplifier to be placed away from sensitive audio components to reduce noise. The Eagle is microprocessor-controlled with modes for standby, sleep, normal operation, voltage calibration, and factory default programming. It is compatible with 50Hz or 60Hz pulleys and includes a NEMA 5-15 output socket. The system is highly regarded for its rock-solid speed stability and low distortion, making it a recommended upgrade for turntables with synchronous motors.
