About the P-3A
The Perpetual Technologies P-3A is a digital-to-analog processor designed to convert digital audio signals into high-quality analog output. It is based on the Crystal Semiconductor CS4397 DAC chipset and the CS8420 input receiver/sample-rate-converter chip, which also supports sample-rate conversion and upsampling. The P-3A accepts multiple digital inputs including I2S (via 5-pin mini-DIN conforming to the Audio Alchemy standard), AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF, and TosLink optical, handling input bit depths from 16 to 24 bits and sample rates from 8kHz up to 108kHz, with optional 192kHz support through the I2S input (requiring a factory modification). The analog output stage operates in class-A using Burr-Brown OPA134 operational amplifiers, delivering line-level analog output through RCA connectors. The unit includes a pushbutton to toggle absolute phase and offers flexible physical placement options with supplied adhesive feet for vertical or horizontal orientation. The P-3A is often paired with the P-1A Digital Correction Engine, which upsamples and enhances digital signals before passing them to the P-3A for conversion. The P-3A is noted for its very low distortion (-140dB THD+N under optimal conditions) and high dynamic range (120dB), placing it among the best consumer digital audio products. It is housed in a compact chassis measuring approximately 5.5" x 8.25" x 1.75" and weighs about 4 lbs. No balanced outputs or remote control are included. Upgrades are not currently planned for the P-3A, but a balanced version (P-5A) with level control and remote is anticipated in the future.
