About the MX5050 B2III
The Otari MX5050 B2III is a professional analog 1/4-inch 2-track reel-to-reel tape recorder designed for studio and broadcast use. It features an optimized three-head design for superior frequency response, low distortion, and high signal-to-noise ratio. The transport uses a quartz PLL servo-controlled direct drive capstan motor with dynamic braking and motion sensing. It includes transformerless balanced XLR inputs and outputs, a built-in mini-autolocator with three cue-point memories, a rehearse function, automatic monitor switching, and a built-in test oscillator with external oscillator input. Variable pitch control allows ±20% speed adjustment in 0.01% steps. The machine has front panel record setup adjustments and a rugged mechanical construction with a 1/4-inch deck plate, cast aluminum side panels, and steel support members. Tape speeds supported include 15 and 7.5 ips, with optional 3.75 ips on some versions. It supports NAB and IEC equalization standards and has a frequency response of approximately 30 Hz to 20 kHz at 15 ips, with wow and flutter around 0.06%. The unit weighs about 24 kg and measures 527 x 430 x 225 mm. It is no longer manufactured.
