About the MTR-12
The Otari MTR-12 is a professional-grade 1/4-inch stereo master tape recorder introduced in 1984, designed for mastering and archival purposes. It features a modular design with extreme durability, a built-in meter bridge for level monitoring, and two audio outputs. The machine supports reel sizes up to 12.5 inches and offers multiple tape speeds including 3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 ips. It uses a 2-track, 2-channel stereo/monaural system with 3 DC servo motors for precise tape transport. The MTR-12 provides selectable equalization standards (NAB/IEC/AES) and has excellent audio performance with a frequency response up to 27-29 kHz, signal-to-noise ratio around 73-77 dB, total harmonic distortion of 0.15%, and wow and flutter as low as 0.04% at 30 ips. It is well-regarded for its quiet and natural sound, logical layout, and ease of use in professional studios. Dimensions are approximately 846 x 584 x 660 mm, and it weighs about 113.4 kg. The machine is no longer manufactured but remains a popular choice for analog mastering and archival recording.
