About the PM8
The PM-8 is a solid-state phono preamplifier designed for both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges. It features full adjustability for gain and loading via DIP switches, allowing precise matching to various cartridges. The unit has a separate power supply and a satin black finish with blue LED indicators. It offers a very low noise floor and exceptional background blackness, enhancing detail retrieval especially in classical and progressive rock music. The PM-8 supports loading adjustments from 24 ohms to 1k ohm for MC cartridges and 47k ohms for MM cartridges, with capacitance adjustment limited to 100 pF for MM. Gain settings range from 80 to 2000 times. It has one RCA input and one RCA output, plus a grounding terminal. The signal-to-noise ratio is approximately 96 dB, and power consumption is about 20 watts. The PM-8 is praised for its ease of setup, excellent sonic performance, and superior build quality compared to contemporaries. It is often paired aesthetically and functionally with the Opera PS-1 speed controller.
