About the Gamma mkI
The Nikko Gamma mkI is a stereo FM tuner released around 1977-1978, designed for high-fidelity audio reception. It features a 5-gang tuning system with an analogue FM tuning scale covering 87.4 to 109 MHz. The tuner offers a sensitivity of 1.6uV and a signal-to-noise ratio of 75dB, with low distortion of 0.08% and selectivity of 80dB. It outputs a fixed 750mV signal and includes both fixed and variable line outputs. The design includes a discrete output stage with Nichicon capacitors and a sophisticated IF section with dual filter paths for wide and narrow bandwidths, contributing to its excellent sound quality. The tuner uses the HA11223W MPX PLL IC for stereo decoding and features a balanced power supply with local regulation for noise reduction. It is praised for its smooth highs, strong bass, and effective noise reduction, although some units may experience tuning quirks due to age or design. The Gamma mkI is considered a great tuner for its price and era, often modded for improved performance.
