About the SM310
The Newcomb SM-310 is a half-track, two-channel, two-speed tape recorder designed for either stereo or monophonic recording and playback. It features cybernetic engineering for intuitive operation, making it one of the simplest machines to operate. The transport control is centered on a single lever "joy stick" that allows smooth, positive, and effortless tape handling. It includes two lighted recording level meters protected against overload, a four-digit counter for precise tape positioning, and a removable head cover for easy editing. The machine uses a powerful single motor that is fully synchronous, precision-built for continuous dependable operation and speed accuracy. It has die-cast aluminum spindles and is equipped to handle NAB hubs. The oversize brakes are designed to last the life of the machine. Tape loading is straight line with a dual-acting tape tensioning device to maintain control even with larger reels. It includes an automatic shut-off switch and positive erase provided by a low distortion, balanced coil pills double triode erase oscillator. The machine has ganged volume control for outputs and a balance control to balance playback levels between channels. It offers a choice of low or high impedance microphone inputs via Newcomb Humfree plug-in transformers and uses Cannon XLR-3-12C male connectors for microphone input sockets. All parts are made in the USA, and the equipment is approved by Underwriters Laboratories. The SM-310 was50 when new.
