About the xEMU Suit Audio Communications System
The xEMU Suit Integrated Audio Communications System is designed for NASA's Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuits. It features internal loudspeakers and digital microphones combined with an adaptive Acoustic Echo Canceller (AEC), voice operated transmission (VOX), and automatic gain control (AGC). The system mounts transducers in an exploded commcap configuration with helmet-attached speakers near the ears and three microphones positioned at the collar. It reduces the need for worn communication equipment, enhancing crewmember comfort, range of movement, and situational awareness. The system also addresses challenges such as suit noise and acoustic interference from suit components and gas flow, improving audio clarity during extravehicular activities.
