About the CDX
The Naim Audio CDX is a high-end single-box CD player introduced around 1999, featuring HDCD decoding and based on Philips CD7 parts with a Philips VAM 1205 transport. It uses an SAA 7376 servo-controller chip for transport control and error correction, feeding data to a Pacific Microsonics PMD-100 HDCD decoder/digital filter. The player outputs 8x oversampled data to dual Burr-Brown PCM 1702-K 20-bit DACs controlled by a low-jitter master clock, followed by a seven-pole analog filter. The CDX employs a unique glass-reinforced, ultra-rigid, single-hinged drawer mechanism optimized for rigidity and isolation, allowing top-loading without requiring top-shelf placement. It has a fully double-regulated power supply with 20 low-noise regulators on the main board and separate supplies for servo and display boards. An optional outboard XPS power supply is available for improved sound quality. The design emphasizes simplicity and functionality, avoiding unnecessary features. Sonically, it is described as fluid, creamy-warm, and relaxed with a full, deep bass and an analog feel, though bass pitch definition may be somewhat soft. Dimensions are approximately 16.75" W x 3" H x 11.75" D, weighing 25 lbs. The original The CDX is regarded as a reliable and musical player with a classic Naim design and engineering pedigree.
