About the VI

The Nagra VI is a Swiss-made eight-track digital recorder designed for professional field recording and post-production use. It features six independent analog inputs: inputs 1 to 4 have traditional Nagra microphone preamplifiers supporting dynamic and phantom +48V microphones with selectable sensitivity and audio limiters, while inputs 5 and 6 serve as line-level inputs or can be switched to AES digital inputs, allowing a total of eight recording tracks. The preamps use in-house wound transformers for fully floating inputs, improving signal-to-noise ratio. The unit records 24-bit audio at sampling rates from 32 kHz up to 192 kHz onto a 120GB internal hard disk, which can be replaced by an SSD, and supports removable Compact Flash cards. It includes a full SMPTE/EBU time code system with chase synchronizer, iXML metadata support, programmable digital filters, and Ambisonic microphone monitoring. The recorder has a sunlight-readable 3.5" TFT color display, ergonomic menus, and is powered by a removable lithium-ion battery pack (4.6 Ah standard, optional 13.8 Ah for over 12 hours operation). Connectivity includes analog line outputs (2 x XLR, 4.4V max), digital AES-3 output, headphone jacks, and external DC power input. The Nagra VI is renowned for its exceptional audio transparency, build quality, and reliability in harsh environments. It won the TEC Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement in 2009.
