About the Orbe SE
The J.A. Michell Engineering Orbe SE is a compact flagship turntable that delivers the performance of the full Orbe model in a smaller footprint. It employs a belt-drive mechanism with a free-standing motor unit to minimize noise and vibration transmission. Key design elements include low-contact-area solid aluminum feet, a three-point spring suspension system with height adjustment, and a weighted pendulum-style sub-chassis for exceptional stability and vibration absorption. The inverted oil-circulating main bearing ensures full lubrication, reduced noise, and longevity. The extra heavy 60mm thick platter, made from vibration-damping acrylic material similar to vinyl, provides superior speed stability and neutral sound reproduction. Powered by the sophisticated Orbe controller with Never Connected™ circuitry, large toroidal transformer, and servo motor control with tacho feedback, it achieves precise 33.3 and 45 rpm speeds. The Orbe screw-down record clamp effectively flattens warped records. Compatible tonearms include TecnoArm 2, T2, T3, Rega RB300 derivatives, and SME Series V. It offers upgrade paths to the full Orbe with double plinth and dustcover. Performance is characterized by exceptional clarity, dynamic range, deep bass, wide soundstage, and subtle warmth, though with slightly looser low bass compared to top direct-drive decks.
